South Sands Ferry and Sea Tractor, Salcombe

A short estuary ferry between central Salcombe and South Sands Beach, with the well-known Sea Tractor doing the final stretch. The ferry leaves Whitestrand pontoon in the centre of Salcombe and runs every 30 minutes from 9.45am, with the last departure typically at 5.15pm (later in August). At South Sands the boat meets a wheeled landing platform that drives out into the shallows so you step straight from boat to dry sand. Dogs travel free and the operator describes the service as actively dog friendly, with treats sometimes on hand for well-behaved passengers. The crossing takes around 15 minutes and the season runs from late March to the end of October.
