Eden Project
Eden Project is a full day out, especially when you go with someone else so you can take it in turns inside the Biomes (more on the dog policy below).
The site was once a clay mine – a barren crater with no soil. It has been transformed into a global garden, with two enormous indoor Biomes and over 20 acres of outdoor gardens spread across the slopes.
The Rainforest Biome takes you through the humid tropics of South America, West Africa, SE Asia and the tropical islands, with an accessible canopy walkway giving views over the whole space. Allow about an hour and a half. It gets very hot inside (18 to 35°C), so dress for it and take care with babies or anyone who struggles in heat.
The Mediterranean Biome is calmer and cooler (9 to 25°C), with olive trees, vines and the smell of warm herbs in the air. Around an hour is enough. There is al fresco dining inside if you want to stop for something.
The Outdoor Gardens are over 20 acres, with more than 3,000 varieties of plant. Allow about two hours. You will find seasonal borders, art installations, the Wild Edge area, the Crops area, play areas, fruit and veg gardens, and the Climate Garden which takes you through 400 million years of plant history.
The food at the cafes is great. The Biome Kitchen is the main catering spot, serving a varied menu through the day, and dogs are welcome inside.
Dog policy: well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout the outdoor gardens, the Biome Kitchen and the Core Cafe. They are not allowed inside the indoor Biomes or children’s play areas (assistance dogs excepted). No charge, up to two dogs per human. Dog water stations are dotted around the site, and they serve dog-friendly ice cream too.
To visit the Biomes themselves you will need to take it in turns – one person stays with the dogs in the outdoor gardens while the other goes inside, then swap.
