Trebah Garden

Trebah Garden is a subtropical garden near Mawnan Smith, just south of Falmouth. We drove there from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary along some very narrow and winding but very pretty lanes, and it paired beautifully with the sanctuary for a full day out.

The garden runs down a steep wooded ravine to its own private shingle beach, Polgwidden Cove, on the Helford. There are around four miles of paths through 26 acres. The valley was planted from the 1830s by the Fox family, who turned a wooded combe into a garden of tree ferns, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and subtropical planting. It is one of the Great Gardens of Cornwall.

It is very dog-friendly. The ladies were welcomed with a treat at the entrance desk. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the garden and on the beach. The Trebah Kitchen cafe has dog-friendly seating indoors as well as out, and there is a Boathouse Beach Cafe down at the cove.

The beach has a remarkable history. In 1944 it was an embarkation point for American troops heading to Omaha Beach for the D-Day landings, and there are memorials on the cove commemorating them.

The terrain is moderate. The paths are mostly surfaced or gravel, but the valley is steep in places and it is uphill on the way back from the beach. Sensible footwear helps.

We had a great lunch at the Trebah Kitchen. Lots of choice and the food was very good. Highly recommended for a visit, and it works well with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary for a day out west.
