The Springer Spaniel

The Springer Spaniel

Tried and tested

The Springer Spaniel is an 18th-century gastro pub on the A388 at Treburley, between Launceston and Callington. We went for lunch on a torrentially wet day and it was exactly the right place to be.

It is totally dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome in every part of the pub. We were warmly welcomed with the four ladies, there were treats waiting on the table, and the lovely waitress brought over a bowl of water for them. We did not have room for the pop-up pen, so the ladies settled on their mats in the corner by our table and were very content.

The building keeps its original beams, bare brick and parquet floor, with a large built-in wood burner. Dark, stylish decor with a gorgeous fireplace. There is a bar, a snug, a restaurant area and a beer garden for warmer days. The pub started life as The Sportsman’s Arms around 1815 and was renamed in the early 1990s after the then-owners’ rescue springer spaniel.

The food was delicious. I had sausage and mash with seasonal greens, and Ros had a chicken Caesar salad with skin-on chunky fries. For pudding I had strawberries and cream – strawberries in a balsamic and strawberry purée, with meringue, clotted cream, ice cream and mint. Just perfect.

The kitchen serves a gastro-pub menu cooked to order from local South West produce. There is a car park on site, although it can get busy. Booking is recommended.

If you have a larger group or bigger breeds, it is worth calling ahead (01579 370 424) so they can give you space.
